How it works
About the physicians (skilled worker and express entry criteria)
Since 18 February 2026 Nova Scotia has no standalone Physician stream. The former Physician stream criteria now sit inside the Skilled Worker stream, which is not linked to Express Entry, and the former Labour Market Priorities for Physicians criteria sit inside the Nova Scotia: Express Entry stream. The Express Entry route needs a Letter of Interest from the province and a return for service agreement. Nova Scotia has charged application fees since 1 September 2026.
Applying from outside Canada: You can apply from abroad, but you need legal status in the country where you live now. The Skilled Worker physician criteria are on the province's Skilled Worker page.
Source: the province's own page for this stream. Last checked October 11, 2026. Provinces change stream criteria without notice, so confirm the detail before you rely on it.
Requirements
What this stream asks for
- Occupation: general practitioner or family physician (NOC 31102), or specialist physician (NOC 31100 or 31101)
- A signed approved opportunity on official Nova Scotia Health or IWK letterhead stating you are eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia
- Express Entry route: a Letter of Interest from the province, and an expression of interest submitted within 30 calendar days of the date it was issued
- Express Entry route: a signed Return for Service Agreement with the Department of Health and Wellness, committing to live and work in Nova Scotia for at least two years
- Legal status in your current country of residence
Programme
The Nova Scotia programme right now
Open. Nova Scotia consolidated ten streams into four on 18 February 2026. Two changes since then affect applicants directly: expressions of interest now expire after twelve months, from 1 May 2026, and the province began charging application fees on 1 September 2026.
Ten streams were consolidated into these four on 18 February 2026. Expressions of interest submitted before that date remain active. Nova Scotia also lists Critical Vacancies in its navigation, but the province states plainly that it is not an invitation to apply for a nomination. Note also that the province's immigration website now lives at liveinnovascotia.com: the former novascotiaimmigration.com address redirects there, so older links and printed guides still work but no longer show the domain you may be expecting. The International Graduate Entrepreneur route was not closed in the consolidation, but it is no longer a standalone stream; it survives as sub-criteria of the Entrepreneur stream.
