How it works

About the skills immigration: skilled worker

The province's main worker route. You register in a pool, are scored, and wait to be invited. Nomination can be taken through Express Entry, which adds 600 points to your federal score, or as a paper-based application. Crucially for applicants abroad, the two years of skilled experience can have been earned anywhere in the world.

Applying from outside Canada: Open from abroad. The one extra condition is that your employer must show genuine local recruitment efforts, which is waived only if you already work for that employer in British Columbia or the role is a senior or highly specialised one.

Requirements

What this stream asks for

  • An employer declaration form completed before you register
  • At least two years of full-time equivalent experience in a skilled occupation within the last ten years, gained in Canada or abroad
  • The credential the occupation normally requires, plus any licence, registration or certification it requires in British Columbia
  • Language at CLB 4 or above
  • A wage that meets the province's minimum for the role, and an income that meets its threshold for where you will live and how many dependants you have

Programme

The British Columbia programme right now

OpenBC Provincial Nominee Program

Open and drawing regularly. British Columbia refocused the programme in April 2026 around three priorities it calls Care, Build and Innovate, and invitations now name those categories. The Entry Level and Semi-Skilled stream is closed, the technology priority draws ended, and the province has said it will not launch new student streams.

The Entry Level and Semi-Skilled stream closed after its final invitations in December 2024, and the technology priority draws ended the same month. British Columbia has stated it will not launch new student streams, so studying in the province earns extra registration points but is no longer a route of its own.
