How it works
About the alberta opportunity stream
Alberta's largest stream by far, and the most congested: more than twenty thousand profiles were waiting in the pool as of September 2026. Maintained status during processing is not accepted; the permit has to be valid.
Applying from outside Canada: Not available from abroad: it requires an Alberta work permit and a year of Alberta work experience.
Source: the province's own page for this stream. Last checked September 11, 2026. Provinces change stream criteria without notice, so confirm the detail before you rely on it.
Requirements
What this stream asks for
- A valid Alberta work permit at both application and assessment
- Twelve months of full-time work in the current occupation in Alberta within the last eighteen
- A job offer from the current Alberta employer
- Language at CLB 5 for jobs in TEER 0 to 3, CLB 4 for TEER 4 and 5, and CLB 7 for nurse aides
- A high school education or its Canadian equivalent, assessed if foreign
Programme
The Alberta programme right now
Open, with no structural overhaul. Changes this year have been administrative: a fee to submit a worker expression of interest from April 2026, editable profiles from May, and an extra 200 nominations in August taking the year's allocation to 6,603.
Alberta's only expired streams are the employer-driven and strategic recruitment categories, which ended in 2018. Note that Alberta does not stamp its stream pages with a last-updated date, and one page still refers to priorities for 2024 and early 2025, so treat undated Alberta detail with care.
