Pathway 1
Express Entry for nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
Express Entry is not the front door for nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates. The Federal Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience Class programs only count work experience in TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupations, and this occupation is classified below that. Candidates in this occupation usually enter through a provincial stream or a work permit, and some later qualify for Express Entry after moving into a supervisory role.
IRCC also runs category-based rounds that invite lower-scoring candidates who have recent experience in a listed occupation group. This occupation belongs to the healthcare and social services family, which has been one of the categories in recent years. The exact list of eligible NOC codes and the amount of experience required change from year to year, so confirm the current list on IRCC’s Express Entry page before you rely on a category draw.

Pathway 2
Provincial nomination
Provinces nominate people whose occupation they need, and a nomination adds 600 points to an Express Entry profile or opens a direct permanent residence application. For nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates, the streams to watch are those that target in-demand occupations, those that reward a job offer in the province, and those that invite candidates already working there on a permit.
Based on labour-market demand, the provinces most relevant to this occupation are listed below. Each province page shows its active streams and recent nominations.

Pathway 3
Work permits for nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
Most people who come to Canada to work as a nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates hold an employer-specific work permit. There are two ways an employer can support one. Under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program the employer first obtains a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada, which confirms it advertised the job and could not find a Canadian or permanent resident. Under the International Mobility Program the job is LMIA-exempt: the employer instead submits the offer through IRCC’s Employer Portal and pays a compliance fee, and you apply with the offer number.
Common LMIA exemptions are transfers within a multinational company, professionals covered by a free-trade agreement such as CUSMA, spouses of skilled workers and students, International Experience Canada for young people from partner countries, and permits that give a significant benefit to Canada. If your employer has an office abroad, or you have a partner who already holds a Canadian permit, ask about these before an LMIA is started, because an exempt permit is usually faster and cheaper.
Because this occupation sits at TEER 4 or 5, an LMIA application is assessed against the wage threshold for the province, and lower-wage positions face a cap on the share of a workforce that can be foreign workers plus stricter advertising rules. Expect the employer’s side of the process to take longer than your own application.
A work permit is temporary, but it is often the strongest step towards permanent residence. Skilled work in Canada opens the Canadian Experience Class after one year and improves your score in most provincial streams, and time spent working here counts towards Express Entry points for Canadian experience.
